I’m once again fortunate to have a somewhat okay photo-documentary of the new instance on the PTR, “The Pit of Sauron”. This is only one part of the larger 5-man instance, which contains much more parts and pieces of the story to really show us as players what it’ll truly take to defeat a menace like The Lich King.
(Though, friend of the blog Muji doesn’t want him to be dead… or anything else.)
I’d like to thank the group that let me take these shots and didn’t kick me for being slow!
Here we go.
Stepping into the instance, we're greeted by our "main" enemy for this section: Scourgelord Tyrannis (a Death Knight-type). This guy, like any good villain, throws a few minions our way (including these jokers, necromancer-like dudes that cast Seed of Corruption) and at our allies, Lady Sylvanas. I turned around and saw her fire a volley of shots with two other Dark Rangers, both elves, and knocked a bunch of skeletons wielding axes and swords right out (they were normal mobs though).
Our group composed of a feral druid tank, restoration druid, enhancement shaman, destruction warlock, and myself (retribution paladin) take out some of the patrols while completing our goal for Sylvanas: freeing the many Horde slaves in the area from the many giant skeletons holding shovels (note, they stun for 4 seconds with a debuff called "Shovelled!") and random Scourge elf chicks who are more than able to cast Shadow Bolts and... be... annoying.
One of the few things that happened that surprised our group: gargoyles picking up the slaves who just can't take it anymore and dropping them, killing them. Then the gargoyles set themselves up ready to attack. They are pulled separately and have a "Stoneskin" buff that reduces all damage taken by 90% (on them). Slightly annoying. They have a Gargoyle Strike as well, but I assume it's not that dangerous!
The first boss we encountered was Ick and Krick. Ick, being the strange corpse-giant-costume that Krick sat in. The fight was easy; Ick used Krick to throw plague clouds on the ground. The boss, at some point, starts targeting and chasing our tank around--- not something dangerous, but something to worry about if you have a PUG and people aren't paying attention. On this heroic, Krick (your main target) had around 650k health. (Hint: the mobs you pull and kill individually prior to this fight also drop goop on the ground... I hear you don't stand in it!)
After Krick goes down, Ick gives up. Sylvanas comes out to interrogate and finds out that in order to gain access to Frostmourne in the Halls of Reflection, we must kill Scourgemaster Tyrannus. He then swoops in (not pictured), hovering above us, Strangulating the leper defector (see what I did there?), taunting us... then flies away, leaving the corpse of the green gnome on the ground.
As we move around to get to our next boss, killing some of the Ymirjar and Vargul mobs that pose no threat to our overgeared group (not all of us were PTR, especially me). We come across all the slaves we saved, including a special one--- an orc warrior who had a name (but I can't remember it and I don't have a SS of it; ARGH). We walk by to our next boss...
... Forgemaster Garfrost. Think of him as a very angry, undead, giganormous plague giant. He uses Frost based abilities, including a debuff that causes you to take more of it. During the fight, a la Mr. Smite from Deadmines, he'll start making weapons that do different things--- his first weapon, if I remember correctly, a sword. His second, a mace. Both do debuffs like "take 8k damage after 10 seconds" and stun and slow mechanics. Garfrost will also throw big hunks of saronite at you--- dodge them; sometimes, a slave will pop out to help you. Either way, he's not a difficult fight. However, when we pulled him, he came with about 10 other skeleton smiths with 30k a piece; easy enough. This boss also had about 700k health, I think... either way, only a 2-3 minute fight a best.
We head up a hill that the Scourgelord summons skeletons to charge down the hill with. We encounter caster skeletons (the magi-type ones you see around in Icecrown patrolling with the Fallen Hero mobs), and regular tall ones with weapons. Easily killed!
We go into this icy looking cave. As soon as we do, it starts raining my personal favorite ground effect... the Hodir icicles! They knock you back if you get hit, interrupt casting obviously with the move, and does some damage as well. During this, the icicles may even contain some skeleton mobs! Also, as we progressed, skeletons of all sizes (some elite with 33k, some elite with 90k), and even a Earth Revenant popped out (he had 200k HP or soemthing)! Our warlock got rocked here, heh.
Exiting the cave, we see the Scourgelord with his mount hovering off the ground. As soon as we got into that open area, the slaves we had saved earlier come with gear, along with that special named Orc I just can't remember... and then we decided to pull. The warlock DoT'd up the mount (an independent target with a name; again, names fail me).
The Scourgelord has almost 1.1 million health! And suddenly, the frost wyrm let his or her passenger off and the boss jumped into our group. Meanwhile, behind us, the horde allies we had gained were fighting off hordes of skeletons and other Scourge. We continued to fight the obvious threat, dodging frozen pot shots from the wyrm above us (you can ignore it, but it'll target people and shoot patches of ice that slow and do damage). During this fight, the Scourgelord will also target someone and if that person gets healed, it'll heal the boss. If that person deals damage, it'll make the boss hurt the tank for that much! Also, dodge the huge icicles that land...
... after we killed the boss (took some time, not to mention our group sans the tank and myself got owned by an icicle freezing everyone on a patch of damaging ice), I decided to say 'sup to Sylvanas and her... uh... cohorts. Yeah. Sup.
I also took some time to sight-see. Here's a huge mine with big hunks of (unfortunately un-mineable) Saronite. But there are Alliance elites down there too; sadly we did not traverse down into those depths (complete with a pool of water). I don't think there's an easy way up; the ledges are lined with Scourge geists and skeletons. There's even this strange floaty thing that... well, floats. It's got one of those Ocular things on it though. Wonder if it's been watching us.
... and that's it! This is me as my paladin, Vulpix on Ysera (US-PvE, EST). Shameless plug: if you're looking for a guild that is awesome, check out our guild website to the right in my links (Lowered Expectations). We're doing pretty well in content, at least I think so, and we're always looking for someone to fit in our ranks. Check the website for more details.
